The Courage to Begin a New Chapter
A Leadership Reflection for International Women’s Month
March is International Women’s Month, a time to celebrate the courage, strength, and impact of women everywhere. It’s also a reminder of something powerful: many of the most meaningful chapters in our lives begin when we have the courage to turn the page.
Not because everything is perfect.
Not because the path is completely clear.
But because something inside of us knows it’s time.
In a recent conversation on my podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Joanie Bily, CEO of Dress for Success Worldwide, about what it takes to step into a new chapter. Joanie made a bold decision to walk away from a role where she no longer felt valued and pursue work that aligned more deeply with her purpose.
Her story reminded me that new chapters often require two things: clarity and courage.
Whether you're considering a career shift, a leadership change, a new business idea, or simply a new way of showing up in your life, here are three practical ways to navigate a new chapter with intention.
1. Listen to the Quiet Signals
Before a new chapter begins, there are often small signals we ignore.
Maybe your energy feels different.
Maybe work that once excited you now drains you.
Maybe you feel a pull toward something more meaningful.
Instead of pushing those feelings aside, get curious about them.
Try this:
Take 10 minutes and reflect on these questions:
Where in my life do I feel most energized right now?
Where do I feel misaligned or unseen?
What is something I’ve been thinking about doing but haven’t acted on yet?
Awareness is often the first step toward a new beginning.
2. Don’t Wait for Perfect Timing
One of the biggest myths about starting a new chapter is that we’ll somehow know the “perfect time.”
The truth is, most meaningful chapters begin before we feel fully ready.
Courage doesn’t mean having all the answers.
It means taking the next step even when the path isn’t fully clear.
Try this:
Identify one small action you can take this week toward the chapter you’re considering.
Examples might include:
Reaching out to someone who inspires you.
Exploring a new opportunity.
Writing down a vision for what the next season of your life could look like.
Momentum often begins with one brave step.
3. Surround Yourself with People Who Believe in Your Growth
No meaningful chapter is written alone.
The people around us can either fuel our growth or quietly hold us back.
When you’re stepping into something new, it’s important to surround yourself with people who:
Encourage your vision.
Speak truth into your life.
Remind you of your strengths when doubt shows up.
Try this:
Make a short list of three people you trust who support your growth. Reach out to one of them and share what you’re thinking about exploring.
Sometimes the encouragement we need is just one conversation away.
A Final Thought for International Women’s Month
To the women reading this: the world needs the leadership, courage, and perspective you bring.
And sometimes the most powerful leadership decision we can make is simply this:
Choosing to begin again.
