The Hardest Part of Growth Is Saying Yes Before You Feel Ready

Ten days ago, I stood backstage preparing to give my very first TEDx talk.

And if I’m being honest, there was a moment where I thought:
“What in the world am I doing?”

My heart was racing.
My mind was replaying every possible thing that could go wrong.
And despite spending years speaking on stages and teaching leaders about growth, I realized something important:

Growth still stretches me too.

The truth is, growth sounds exciting until you’re the one living it.

We love the idea of growth.
We celebrate the outcomes.
We applaud the big moments.

But what we don’t talk about enough is everything that happens before those moments:
The fear.
The pressure.
The overthinking.
The self-doubt.
The vulnerability of stepping into something bigger before you fully feel ready.

And I think that’s why so many people stay stuck.

Not because they aren’t capable.
Not because they don’t have potential.
But because growth often asks us to move before we feel comfortable doing so.

Whether you are:
Building a business,
Leading a team,
Starting over,
Changing careers,
Working on your health,
Pursuing a dream,
Or simply trying to become a better version of yourself…

Growth will require courage long before it gives you confidence.

As I reflected on this TEDx experience, there were three lessons that really stood out to me.

1. Growth Requires Movement Before Confidence

So many of us are waiting to feel fully ready before we take the next step.

But most of the time, confidence does not come first.
Action does.

If I had waited until I felt completely ready to give this TEDx talk, I may never have stepped onto that red dot.

Sometimes growth looks like taking the step while your knees are still shaking.

And honestly, I think many of us need to stop waiting for certainty and start trusting ourselves enough to begin.

2. Most Growth Happens Quietly Before the World Ever Sees It

People will eventually see the TEDx stage.

What they won’t fully see are:
The rewrites.
The practice sessions.
The mental battles.
The moments of frustration.
The self-talk.
The sacrifices.
The hours spent trying to get better.

And isn’t that true for so much in life?

We often compare ourselves to someone else’s visible moment while forgetting there were years of invisible growth behind it.

The promotion.
The healthy relationship.
The successful business.
The confident leader.
The big opportunity.

Most of those things are built quietly before they are celebrated publicly.

Do not underestimate the power of the work you are doing behind the scenes right now.

3. The Goal Is Not Perfection, It’s Impact

One of the biggest lessons I learned during this process was this:

The goal was never to be perfect.
The goal was to help people.

And I think that applies to leadership too.

So many leaders put enormous pressure on themselves to:
Have all the answers,
Get everything right,
Never make mistakes,
Or appear polished all the time.

But leadership is not about perfection.
It is about impact.

It is about showing up.
Serving others.
Growing yourself.
And being willing to stretch outside your comfort zone so others feel permission to do the same.

I cannot wait to share the final TEDx video with all of you in the coming weeks and show you what all the hard work, stretching, fear, growth, and preparation turned into.

But honestly, the biggest lesson may not be what happened on the stage.

It may be what happened in me before I ever stepped onto it.

So if there is something in your life calling you to grow right now, maybe this is your reminder:

You do not have to feel fully ready to take the next step.

Growth rarely waits for comfort.

And sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply say yes before we feel ready.

To Your Growth, as always!

Kelly
